Description

The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Erysiphe euonymi, a member of the Erysiphales order. This obligate parasite colonizes the host plant by forming a dense mycelium on the surface of leaves and shoots, which penetrates the epidermis to extract nutrients using specialized hyphae known as haustoria.

The primary hosts of this pathogen are plants of the Euonymus genus, commonly known as spindle trees. The infection frequently targets ornamental hedges and young plants, often leading to a significant loss of aesthetic value and long-term health decline of the shrubs.

Symptoms are identified by the appearance of white, powdery fungal colonies on the leaves and young stem tissues. As the infection progresses, the fungal growth becomes denser and may develop small, black, spherical structures called cleistothecia, which are the sexual fruiting bodies of the fungus used for overwintering.

The development of the disease is favored by high humidity levels and warm temperatures. Spores are primarily dispersed by wind currents or water splashing, facilitating rapid spread within a nursery or garden environment. Conditions that limit airflow around the plant canopy significantly increase the risk of an outbreak.

The economic impact is manifested by reduced photosynthetic capacity, premature leaf drop, and stunted growth. Effective control requires an integrated approach: improving air circulation through pruning, disposing of infected plant debris to remove overwintering spores, and applying chemical fungicides when symptoms first appear.
