The fungus Erysiphe grossulariae (formerly known as Sphaerotheca mors-uvae) is the primary pathogen responsible for American gooseberry mildew. This fungal disease is a major concern for fruit growers globally, as it is highly contagious and can severely impact the productivity of berry bushes.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are gooseberry plants and various species of the Ribes genus, including currants. It is particularly destructive in regions with moderate, humid climates where it can easily establish itself in both commercial plantations and home gardens.
The symptoms typically begin as a white, powdery dusting on the leaves, young shoots, and developing fruit. As the infection progresses, the fungal mycelium thickens and turns into a brown, felt-like crust.
