Erysiphe heraclei
Description
The causal agent of this disease is the obligate parasitic fungus Erysiphe heraclei. It is a widespread pathogen belonging to the Erysiphaceae family, primarily targeting species within the Apiaceae (umbellifer) family. This fungus is a significant threat to agricultural production of crops such as carrots, parsnips, celery, and fennel.
The host range of Erysiphe heraclei encompasses both cultivated and wild umbellifers. In commercial farming, carrots are the most severely affected crops. The fungus colonizes the epidermis of the plant, deriving nutrients through haustoria, which significantly weakens the plant's metabolic processes and reduces overall yield quality.
Initial symptoms are characterized by the appearance of sparse, white, powdery patches on the leaf surface. These patches expand rapidly, eventually covering the entire foliage, petioles, and stems. As the infection progresses, the powdery mycelium leads to chlorosis, leaf curl, and premature tissue necrosis, which can render the crop unmarketable.
Environmental conditions that favor disease development include high humidity, moderate temperatures (typically 18–25°C), and low light intensity. Rapid spore dissemination occurs via wind, allowing the pathogen to spread across fields quickly. The fungus survives the winter season as cleistothecia on infected debris or as mycelium on biennial host plants and volunteers.
Effective disease management strategy includes:
- Crop rotation with non-host species for 2–3 years.
- Deep incorporation of infected plant residues into the soil.
- Use of resistant cultivars whenever possible.
- Regular field monitoring for early detection.
- Application of fungicides, such as sulfur-based products or DMI inhibitors, during early stages of symptom appearance.
