Description
The disease is caused by the fungus Erysiphe lonicerae, an obligate parasite belonging to the Ascomycota phylum. This pathogen is specifically adapted to infect plants of the Caprifoliaceae family. It is considered one of the most common fungal threats to honeysuckle, impacting both its decorative value and fruit productivity throughout the growing season.
Honeysuckle plants (Lonicera species) are the primary hosts for this fungus. The infection manifests on leaves, petioles, and young succulent shoots. While mature leaves are sometimes less susceptible, they can still host the mycelium, especially under favorable environmental conditions. In severe cases, the fungus covers the entire surface of the plant, significantly inhibiting its development.
The hallmark of the disease is a white, powdery fungal growth that initially appears in small, scattered patches. As the infection progresses, the patches enlarge and eventually cover the entire leaf surface. The mycelium may turn grayish or light brown as it ages, and tiny black spots, known as cleistothecia, appear, serving as overwintering structures for the fungus.
The development of Erysiphe lonicerae is highly dependent on environmental factors, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. Stagnant air caused by dense foliage and poor site spacing exacerbates the spread. Spores are dispersed by wind and splashing water, landing on susceptible host tissue to initiate new infection cycles.
The impact of this disease on the plant is severe due to the loss of photosynthetic leaf area. Premature defoliation weakens the plant, reducing its vigor and cold hardiness for the following winter. Chronic infections often lead to stunted growth, deformed shoots, and a significant decrease in the number and quality of berries, eventually compromising the overall health of the shrub.
