Description

The disease is caused by the fungus Erysiphe quercicola, a pathogen that thrives by extracting nutrients from the host plant cells through specialized haustoria. As an obligate biotroph, it depends entirely on the living tissues of the host. The fungus spreads rapidly, forming a white mycelial network that covers leaves, buds, and succulent shoots, effectively blocking sunlight from reaching the leaf surface.

The primary host range for Erysiphe quercicola includes various oak species, both European and North American varieties. Nursery stock and young saplings are particularly vulnerable, as their rapid growth phases often coincide with the high-activity periods of the fungus. If left unchecked, the pathogen can quickly spread throughout an entire plantation or urban forest, compromising tree health.

Initial symptoms are characterized by white, powdery spots on the leaf blades. As the infection progresses, these spots expand, eventually covering the entire surface of the leaf with a dense, felt-like layer. Infected leaves may curl, distort, and become brittle. Later in the season, tiny black, spherical structures called chasmothecia appear, allowing the fungus to overwinter and re-infect the tree in the following season.

Development of the fungus is highly dependent on environmental conditions, with optimal temperatures ranging between 18°C and 25°C. Moderate to high relative humidity, often induced by frequent rainfall or heavy dew, significantly accelerates spore production and germination. Dense, poorly ventilated canopies trap moisture, creating the perfect incubator for Erysiphe quercicola outbreaks.

The detrimental impact of this disease includes stunted growth, reduced photosynthetic capacity, and overall weakening of the trees. Repeated yearly infections can cause crown dieback, making the trees more susceptible to environmental stress and opportunistic secondary pests. Effective management strategies include:

  • Sanitary pruning of infected twigs during the dormant season.
  • Removing fallen leaf litter to reduce the primary inoculum source.
  • Application of sulfur-based or systemic fungicides during the early stages of infestation.
  • Improving air circulation through proper spacing and pruning techniques.
