Description
Erysiphe radulescui is a specialized fungal pathogen responsible for causing powdery mildew specifically on cannabis plants. As an obligate parasite, this fungus establishes an intimate connection with the host plant's tissues, extracting nutrients and disrupting normal metabolic activity, which weakens the plant's structural integrity.
The primary host for this pathogen is industrial and medicinal hemp (Cannabis sativa). It presents a significant challenge both in controlled indoor environments, where stable conditions are often ideal for the fungus, and in outdoor agricultural settings, particularly in temperate regions with high humidity.
Symptoms initially manifest as small, white, circular spots of mycelium on the surface of the leaves. As the disease advances, these spots coalesce to cover the entire leaf surface with a characteristic white, floury dusting. Infected tissues may become necrotic, chlorotic, and eventually wither, leading to a substantial decrease in the plant's photosynthetic capacity.
Environmental triggers include high relative humidity, poor air circulation, and a lack of direct sunlight, all of which create a conducive environment for spore germination. The disease spreads rapidly through the release of airborne conidia, which can easily move across a farm or grow facility, often hitchhiking on tools or clothing to infect new hosts.
The economic impact of Erysiphe radulescui is severe, as it causes reduced yield, stunted growth, and a decrease in the quality of the raw material. Beyond the loss of total biomass, the presence of the fungus significantly lowers the market value of the crop, and in worst-case scenarios, contamination of flowers makes the harvest entirely unusable for processing.

- Maintain strict hygiene protocols in indoor grow environments to prevent spore accumulation.
- Implement a preventive fungicide application program if regional disease pressure is high.
