Erysiphe syringae-japonicae

Description

The causative agent of this disease is the obligate parasitic fungus Erysiphe syringae-japonicae, which belongs to the Erysiphales order. This pathogen survives on the surface of the plant tissue, extracting nutrients through specialized structures known as haustoria, which penetrate the epidermal cells of the lilac leaves.

The primary host for this fungus is the lilac (Syringa genus). The disease is characterized by its visibility; it affects the aesthetic value of the plant significantly, often transforming lush green foliage into a distorted, dusty-looking canopy. While it is rarely lethal to mature plants, it causes severe stress and weakens the shrub's hardiness.

Symptoms initially manifest as small, white, circular patches of mycelium on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these patches merge, covering both sides of the leaf. By late summer, tiny black specks appear within the white felt — these are chasmothecia, the survival structures that allow the fungus to persist through winter.

Favorable conditions for the development of Erysiphe syringae-japonicae include high relative humidity, moderate temperatures, and poor air circulation around the plant canopy. Thick, unpruned hedges are particularly susceptible to widespread outbreaks because they create a microclimate that traps moisture and spores.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical control. Removing debris from around the base of the plant is critical to reduce the inoculum level for the following year. During the growing season, applications of sulfur-based products or systemic fungicides are recommended to stop the progression of the fungus and protect new growth.

  • Improve airflow through proper pruning techniques.
  • Ensure adequate sun exposure to keep leaves dry.
  • Apply fungicide sprays at the first indication of fungal growth.
