Description
The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Erysiphe trifoliorum, an obligate biotroph belonging to the Erysiphaceae family. As a highly specialized pathogen, it colonizes the leaf surface of host plants, forming a mycelial network that draws nutrients directly from the epidermal cells, which significantly impairs the physiological performance of the affected clover plant.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are various species of clover, particularly red clover (Trifolium pratense), which is widely cultivated for forage and green manure. The disease is common in meadows and pastures worldwide, often appearing during the vegetative stage and potentially causing significant damage to dense stands where air circulation is restricted.
Symptoms are easily identifiable as white, powdery patches on the upper surface of leaves. As the infection progresses, these spots may cover the entire leaf, petiole, and stem, causing the leaves to curl, yellow, and eventually wither. In advanced stages, small black fruiting bodies known as cleistothecia develop within the mycelium, marking the transition to a dormant state.
The development of Erysiphe trifoliorum is favored by warm temperatures and moderate humidity levels. While the fungus thrives in humid conditions, it is also notable for its ability to spread rapidly in dry environments where foliage dew provides enough moisture for spore germination. Wind is the primary vector for the conidia, allowing the disease to spread quickly across large clover fields.
The economic impact of powdery mildew in clover is significant, as it leads to reduced biomass production, lower protein content, and decreased digestibility of the forage. Severe infections weaken the plant's root system, negatively affecting its overwintering capacity and overall longevity in the field.
