Description

Causal agent and disease type. The pathogen is Erysiphe valerianae, an obligate biotrophic fungus that causes powdery mildew. As a member of the Erysiphaceae family, this fungus develops a superficial mycelium on the surface of the host plant, deriving nutrition via haustoria that penetrate the epidermal cells of the plant.

Susceptible crops. The disease primarily affects the common valerian, Valeriana officinalis. It can be found in wild populations as well as in commercial herbal production fields where the plant is cultivated for its bioactive compounds used in pharmaceutical applications.

Symptoms and signs. The characteristic sign of the infection is the appearance of white, powdery, fungal mycelium on leaves, stems, and petioles. As the infection progresses, the leaves may turn chlorotic, curl, and wither prematurely. Heavy colonization by the fungus gives the foliage a dusty, greyish appearance and severely limits the photosynthetic capacity of the plant.

Developmental conditions and impact. The fungus thrives in warm temperatures combined with high humidity, typical of mild summers. Wind-dispersed conidia facilitate rapid spread across fields. The economic impact is significant, as the infection weakens the plant's overall physiology, directly resulting in reduced root growth and lower yields of active substances in the harvested crop.
