Description
Erythricium disease is a serious fungal pathology caused by the Erythricium fungal complex. It primarily affects the bark and vascular tissue of woody perennials, causing deep lesions and interrupting the transport of nutrients, which can ultimately kill the host plant.
This pathogen is most famously associated with the "pink disease" found in tropical and subtropical agriculture. It causes significant damage to economically vital crops such as coffee, citrus, cocoa, and rubber trees, often leading to substantial yield losses in commercial orchards.
Symptoms typically begin with the appearance of a conspicuous pink or white fungal crust on the bark of branches. As the infection progresses, the bark begins to crack and peel, exposing the wood underneath to secondary decay and causing the dieback of branches located above the infection site.
The development of the fungus is heavily dependent on high humidity and rainfall, which facilitate spore dispersal. Warm weather combined with stagnant air in dense canopy structures provides the ideal environment for the fungus to establish and spread rapidly among susceptible trees.
Management and prevention require proactive measures to limit the spread:
- pruning and immediate disposal of infected branches;
- maintaining good spacing to promote air circulation;
- regular application of copper-based fungicidal sprays;
- sanitation of pruning tools to prevent cross-contamination between plants.
