The Erythrogloeaceae family represents a group of fungi within the Diaporthales order, known for their role as plant pathogens. These organisms primarily target woody species, often leading to significant stress on both wild trees and cultivated orchard plants, interfering with their vital biological processes.

These fungi typically act as agents of necrotic diseases. Their primary hosts include a wide array of deciduous trees. The infection mechanism often involves the colonization of the host's bark and phloem tissues, which disrupts the transport of water and nutrients, eventually leading to localized or systemic damage.

Symptoms of an infection include distinctive lesions, bark cracking, and the development of small fungal reproductive structures (fruiting bodies) on the surface of the plant tissue. Over time, these symptoms progress into branch dieback, leaf wilting, and in severe cases, the death of the tree if left untreated.
