In the agricultural sector, Escherichia coli is recognized as a significant biological hazard rather than a primary plant pathogen. While it does not cause necrotic plant diseases in the conventional sense, it acts as a dangerous contaminant, particularly for fresh produce. Its presence in agricultural fields poses a threat to food safety standards and can lead to severe market restrictions.
The transmission of this bacterium to crops primarily occurs through contaminated irrigation water, the use of untreated manure as fertilizer, and inadequate handling practices. Escherichia coli enters plant tissues through stomata, cracks, or mechanical injuries, effectively surviving within the vascular system or intercellular spaces of the plant.
Leafy greens such as lettuce, spinach, and herbs, as well as low-growing fruits like strawberries and tomatoes, are the most susceptible crops. The contamination is often difficult to detect in the field, as the plant may show no visible signs of disease, despite carrying a significant bacterial load that can cause spoilage during storage and transport.
The development and spread of Escherichia coli in the field are favored by high soil moisture levels, the presence of untreated organic amendments, and temperature conditions similar to those required for crop growth. Unlike specialized plant pathogens, these bacteria thrive in the presence of fecal matter and can persist in soil for extended periods if conditions remain favorable.
To prevent contamination, producers must implement rigorous Good Agricultural Practices (GAP). These include periodic testing of water sources for microbial quality, ensuring that manure is fully composted and heat-treated before application, and maintaining strict sanitary protocols during the harvest and packaging stages. There is no chemical treatment to "cure" a plant of E. coli, so prevention is the only viable management strategy.
