Unlike typical plant pathogens, it does not attack the crop directly; instead, it targets and parasitizes rust fungi (order Pucciniales), which are common and destructive pathogens of agricultural crops.

The host range of Eudarluca caricis corresponds precisely to the wide distribution of rust fungi. It colonizes the orange or brown pustules found on leaves and stems of cereals, grasses, and many other cultivated plants. By occupying these sites, the hyperparasite effectively disrupts the reproductive cycle of the rust fungus.

Symptoms of its presence are distinct: the typically dusty or powdery appearance of rust pustules changes to a solid, black color.
