The Eustigmataceae family represents a group of yellow-green algae (Eustigmatophyceae) that have become increasingly problematic in modern horticulture. While typically aquatic, these organisms thrive in greenhouse environments, forming dense colonies that compete with crops for light and nutrients.
These algae are eukaryotic organisms that reproduce through zoospores. Their ability to survive in moist environments allows them to colonize soil surfaces, hydroponic channels, and even the stems of seedlings, effectively choking off the plant's ability to exchange gases and absorb light efficiently.
Plants affected by these algae typically show a slimy green or yellowish-brown coating on the substrate surface. In advanced stages, the algae can physically envelop the root crown, leading to secondary fungal infections, root decay, and stunted growth in leafy greens and ornamental transplants.
High humidity, poor airflow, and high light intensity combined with nutrient-rich irrigation water create the perfect environment for Eustigmataceae outbreaks. They are often introduced into greenhouse facilities through contaminated water supplies or air currents, and once established, they reproduce rapidly due to their high tolerance for various pH levels.
Effective management requires a multi-pronged approach focused on environmental modification. Growers should prioritize improving greenhouse drainage, reducing relative humidity, and implementing strict sanitation protocols for irrigation equipment. Using physical barriers, such as dark-colored mulch or covers for hydroponic troughs, can significantly limit algal growth by denying them the light required for photosynthesis.
