Eustigmatophyceae are a class of unicellular algae that, while naturally occurring, act as biological contaminants in modern intensive agriculture. Often overlooked by casual observers, these organisms form dense, mucilaginous mats on soil surfaces or growing media, posing a significant challenge to horticultural productivity.

These algae primarily affect greenhouse crops, nursery stock, and systems utilizing hydroponic or substrate-based cultivation. The most sensitive stages are seed germination and early seedling development, where the algae-induced physical crust directly inhibits oxygen diffusion to the roots, leading to stunted plant development.

The visual symptoms of an Eustigmatophyceae infestation include a distinct green, yellowish, or slimy coating that covers the surface of the growing medium. If left unmanaged, this layer can extend to the stems of the plants, trapping moisture against the plant tissue and promoting secondary bacterial or fungal rot infections.

High nutrient concentrations in the irrigation water serve as a potent catalyst for rapid colonization of any moist surface.

Key measures include the use of light-blocking covers for substrate containers, optimizing irrigation frequency to allow the surface to dry out periodically, and maintaining precise fertilizer concentrations to prevent excessive nutrient runoff that encourages algal growth.
