Eutypella canker is a significant fungal disease caused by species of the genus Eutypella. This pathogen is primarily responsible for stem and branch cankers that impact various hardwood species, including maple and various orchard trees. The fungus behaves as a necrotrophic parasite, colonizing the host's vascular tissues and bark through natural openings, pruning wounds, or environmental damage.

The primary symptom of this disease is the development of sunken, target-shaped cankers on the bark. As the tree attempts to wall off the infection, a prominent callus ridge often forms around the perimeter of the lesion, giving the trunk a distorted and swollen appearance. Under the dead bark, the presence of small, black, flask-shaped structures called perithecia is a definitive sign of fungal sporulation.

Disease progression is heavily influenced by humidity and site conditions. The fungus releases spores during wet weather, which are then dispersed by wind and rain splash. These spores land on susceptible woody tissues, establishing new infections. Trees under abiotic stress, such as drought or soil compaction, are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by the fungus.

The economic and ecological impact of Eutypella canker is severe. In forest stands, it reduces timber quality due to structural defects and stem deformations. In orchards and landscape plantings, the pathogen leads to branch dieback, premature tree death, and significant loss of aesthetic or productive value, making it a critical concern for forest managers and arborists.

Effective management focuses on limiting the spread of the pathogen through sanitation and maintenance. Because there are no direct chemical "cures" once the fungus is established deep in the heartwood, prevention is the primary strategy:

  • Prune and destroy infected branches immediately to reduce inoculum sources.
  • Sterilize pruning tools with ethanol or bleach between trees.
  • Avoid damaging the bark of healthy trees during maintenance activities.
  • Promote tree vigor through proper irrigation and soil management to enhance natural resistance.
