It is important to clarify that Evernia is not a plant disease but a genus of fruticose lichens, most notably Evernia prunastri (oakmoss). These organisms are strictly epiphytic, meaning they use trees purely as a substrate for attachment. They do not penetrate the internal tissues of the tree or derive nutrients from them, contrary to common misconceptions about them being parasitic pathogens.
While Evernia is not a parasite, its presence on fruit trees and forest stands often serves as a bioindicator. It thrives in humid, shady conditions and frequently colonizes trees that have slowed growth rates or are suffering from environmental stress. Seeing these lichens should prompt an assessment of the tree's overall vigor rather than immediate fear of a pathogenic attack.
The visual symptoms involve the growth of grey-green or whitish, branched structures on the bark. They are most commonly found in poorly maintained, dense, or old orchards. The lack of proper light penetration and ventilation in the canopy creates the exact humid microenvironment that these lichens require to flourish and spread throughout the bark surface.
The nuisance caused by Evernia is primarily indirect. The thick growth of lichen can provide shelter for overwintering pests, such as scales or mites, and may potentially harbor spores of actual fungal pathogens. While it does not kill the plant, it can hinder normal gas exchange on the bark surface and makes it harder to monitor the tree for early signs of decay or bark-damaging diseases.
Preventive and control measures are aimed at improving tree vitality and changing the microclimate to be less favorable for lichen growth:
- Conducting regular crown thinning to improve light and air circulation.
- Mechanically cleaning the bark using stiff brushes to remove dead layers.
- Applying whitewash or copper-based treatments to the trunks to sanitize the surface.
- Implementing balanced fertilization programs to sustain the tree's natural defense mechanisms.
