The Exidiaceae family comprises a group of basidiomycete fungi known for their jelly-like, often translucent fruiting bodies. While primarily saprotrophic, these organisms are frequently associated with the decay of weakened or damaged woody plants. In an agronomic context, they serve as indicators of compromised tree health and potential underlying structural decay.

The pathogen thrives in high-humidity environments, which allow their gelatinous fruiting bodies to absorb moisture and expand, facilitating the discharge of spores. These spores are wind-borne and easily colonize susceptible trees through open wounds, pruning cuts, or frost cracks, where they establish mycelial networks that break down lignocellulose compounds in the wood.

Host plants typically include a variety of deciduous trees, with significant impacts observed in fruit orchards and ornamental plantings. Trees experiencing physiological stress—due to drought, nutrient deficiency, or prior damage—are the most vulnerable to colonization, as the natural defense mechanisms of the bark and cambium are insufficient to repel the fungal invasion.

The visual symptoms of an Exidiaceae infection are distinct and easy to recognize during damp weather conditions. The presence of rubbery, gelatinous masses on the bark surface is a primary indicator. Over time, the affected area may show signs of discoloration and softening. If left unchecked, the fungus can penetrate deeper into the sapwood, causing structural instability and eventual branch dieback.
