Exidiopsis is a genus of fungi within the Auriculariales order, which, in an agronomic context, acts as a potential pathogen associated with wood decay and bark degradation in various plant species. While primarily saprotrophic, these fungi can opportunistically colonize weakened plant tissues, causing structural damage that impairs the plant's health and vitality.
The primary hosts for this fungus include a variety of decorative trees, shrubs, and orchard fruit crops. The risk is significantly higher in environments where plants have sustained mechanical damage, frost cracks, or improper pruning wounds, providing an entry point for fungal mycelium to establish deep within the host's vascular tissues.
Symptoms of an Exidiopsis infection often manifest as gelatinous or crust-like growths on the bark, which are particularly prominent during humid or rainy weather conditions. As the infection progresses, the colonized wood tissue becomes soft and discolored, eventually leading to localized necrosis, which disrupts the normal flow of nutrients within the plant.
Development and spread of the pathogen are driven by high humidity and poor aeration within the canopy. The fungi release spores that travel easily through rain splash or wind, colonizing vulnerable surfaces. Extended periods of moisture allow the spores to germinate rapidly, especially on neglected plants that lack proper air circulation and sunlight exposure.
The overall impact of this disease includes stunted growth and increased susceptibility to other pathogens due to weakened physical barriers. Practical management strategies include:
- practicing proper sanitation by removing infected branches;
- applying antiseptic wound dressings to pruning sites;
- improving air circulation through selective pruning;
- utilizing preventive copper-based fungicide sprays during dormant periods.
