Description
Exobasidiosis is a significant fungal disease caused by various species within the class Exobasidiomycetes. These obligate parasites target specific plant tissues, causing physiological disturbances that result in significant morphological changes, often referred to as leaf blisters or galls.
The hosts for these pathogens are predominantly plants in the Ericaceae family, such as rhododendrons, azaleas, and various berries like blueberries and cranberries. The fungus impacts the leaves, flower buds, and young shoots, drawing nutrients directly from the living plant tissue.
Characteristic symptoms include thick, fleshy leaf deformities that may appear pale green, white, yellow, or pinkish-red. As the fungus matures, a white, powdery fungal mat emerges on the surface of the galls, representing the production of basidia and spores that facilitate the spread of the infection.
The development of this disease is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly cool and wet weather during the spring season. High humidity is a critical factor for spore germination and colonization of new leaves, making periods of persistent rain highly dangerous for vulnerable plant collections.
Effective management requires strict sanitation practices, including the manual removal and destruction of all symptomatic plant parts before spores are released. Preventive spraying with fungicides, particularly copper-based products or systemic agents applied during the early growth stages, is essential for maintaining plant health in susceptible populations.
