This pathogen belongs to a group of fungi that induce significant hypertrophy and hyperplasia in host tissues. It is primarily considered a cosmetic and physiological disorder that interferes with the plant's photosynthetic capacity by distorting foliage.
Host Plants: The primary hosts for this fungus are species within the Rhododendron genus, specifically azaleas. While the infection is host-specific, it can become a chronic issue in horticultural settings where azaleas are grown in high densities, such as nurseries or ornamental greenhouse facilities, leading to persistent local outbreaks.
Symptoms and Signs: Infected leaves develop characteristic raised, thickened areas that often show a distinct reticulate or net-like pattern. As the disease progresses, these lesions change color, often turning pale yellow or red. The undersides of the distorted leaves are covered with a white, powdery fungal growth, which represents the sporulation stage of the pathogen, consisting of basidia and basidiospores.
Development and Economic Impact: Fungal growth is highly dependent on cool, wet weather conditions, particularly during the spring bud-break stage. The pathogen survives the winter as mycelium within the host's buds or twigs. The economic impact includes severe reduction in plant vigor, premature defoliation, and aesthetic degradation, which renders the plants unsellable in commercial nursery trade.
Control and Prevention:
- Strict sanitation practices: prune and destroy all infected foliage immediately upon detection.
- Improve air circulation by proper spacing and thinning of the plant canopy.
- Apply preventative fungicide treatments, focusing on copper-based or mancozeb products before bud break.
- Ensure proper drainage and avoid overhead irrigation during humid periods.
- Quarantine new plants to prevent the introduction of the fungus into clean collections.
