Exobasidium leaf and shoot gall is a significant fungal disease caused by the pathogen Exobasidium vaccinii. It primarily affects plants within the Ericaceae family, most notably blueberries, cranberries, lingonberries, and azaleas. This obligate parasite thrives within the host's tissue, diverting nutrients and disrupting normal plant physiological development.

The visual symptoms of the disease are quite distinctive, manifesting as thickened, fleshy, and distorted growth on leaves and shoots. These galls often display vibrant colors, ranging from pale green to deep red. As the pathogen progresses, these distorted tissues become covered in a white, powdery fungal spore layer, which serves as the primary inoculum for further spread.

The development and spread of Exobasidium vaccinii are heavily dependent on environmental conditions. Extended periods of cool, wet weather are ideal for the germination of spores and subsequent infection of new plant growth. The fungus can survive the winter months as mycelium embedded in the buds or twigs of the host plant, emerging to re-infect the plant in the spring.

The economic impact of this disease is primarily manifested through reduced vegetative vigor and yield loss. By distorting the foliage and forcing the plant to waste energy on gall development, the pathogen limits the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively. Chronic infections can lead to severe stunting, dieback, and an overall reduction in the plant's productive lifespan.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. The most critical step is the immediate removal and destruction of symptomatic plant parts to reduce the inoculum load. Cultural practices such as thinning plants to improve air circulation and pruning to remove infected tissue are essential. In severe cases, preventive applications of copper-based fungicides during the dormant season are highly recommended.
