Exophiala infection is a fungal disease affecting various plant species, caused by members of the Exophiala genus. These fungi are typically characterized as dematiaceous hyphomycetes, known for their dark-pigmented mycelium. While often found as soil-borne saprotrophs, they can act as opportunistic pathogens, causing significant damage to plants that are already under stress or have compromised immunity.
These fungi primarily affect ornamental plants, fruit crops, and seedlings grown in controlled environments like greenhouses. They are known for thriving in high-humidity conditions, where they can rapidly colonize growing media and plant surfaces, leading to severe outbreaks if left unmanaged. Their ability to persist in debris makes them a recurring problem in affected cultivation areas.
Symptoms of the disease manifest as the formation of dark, blackish spots on various parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and roots. These areas gradually become necrotic and soft, leading to tissue decay. When roots are affected, the plant shows signs of vascular distress, such as wilting, chlorosis, and stunted growth, ultimately resulting in the death of the entire plant.
The spread and development of Exophiala are heavily influenced by poor agricultural practices. Key risk factors include stagnant water, high soil moisture, lack of adequate ventilation, and the presence of open wounds on plant tissues caused by pests or mechanical damage. The spores are easily dispersed via water splashes, contaminated tools, or air currents within the growing area.
Management and prevention focus on strictly maintaining sanitary conditions. Essential practices include the sterilization of substrates, use of disease-free propagation material, and implementing precise irrigation to prevent waterlogging. Fungicidal treatments should be applied as a curative measure when an outbreak is detected, alongside the immediate removal and destruction of infected plant material to minimize the inoculum load.
