The causative agent of the disease is the fungus Exophiala pisciphila, a member of the black yeast-like fungi. While often studied in the context of aquatic environments, this pathogen also acts as a plant parasite, colonizing root systems and leading to systemic infections in susceptible crops under specific environmental conditions.
This fungus typically impacts horticultural and vegetable crops, especially those grown in high-humidity indoor environments or hydroponic systems. By colonizing the root zone, the pathogen disrupts nutrient uptake, which results in significant losses in plant vigor and overall yield potential.
Symptoms of the infection include root darkening, necrosis of the root hairs, and wilting of the foliage. Plants infected with Exophiala pisciphila often exhibit stunted growth and yellowing, making it difficult to distinguish from other types of root rot without laboratory diagnostic techniques.
The development and spread of this pathogen are driven by excessive soil moisture and poor drainage. The fungus thrives in temperatures between +20°C and +28°C and can easily persist in organic matter, making contaminated soil or irrigation water the primary sources of spread within a growing facility.
