Fabraea is a genus of fungi causing significant leaf spot diseases in various fruit trees, with Fabraea maculata being the most recognized pathogen. This fungal infection affects the photosynthetic capacity of the plant, leading to stunted growth and premature foliage loss.
The disease is categorized as a fungal leaf spot. It primarily impacts members of the Rosaceae family, including quince, pears, and medlars. The pathogen, known in its sexual stage as Diplocarpon mespili, thrives by invading the epidermal tissue of the host, causing characteristic dark necrotic lesions.
Symptoms initially appear as tiny, reddish-purple or brown spots on leaves. These spots enlarge over time, turning dark brown to black and often showing a distinct halo. In severe cases, these lesions coalesce, leading to extensive tissue death, leaf curl, and early defoliation of the tree.
Development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high humidity and moderate temperatures. Rain splash is the primary mechanism for spore dispersal from the overwintering sites—mostly infected fallen leaves—to the new, tender growth during the spring season.
The impact of Fabraea on agriculture can be severe, as early defoliation reduces tree vigor and fruit quality. Effective control strategies prioritize hygiene practices such as removing leaf litter, improving orchard air circulation, and implementing a strict fungicide spray program timed with plant growth stages.
