While primarily recognized as a decomposer of organic matter and wood, this fungus acts as a facultative parasite in agricultural settings, colonizing the root systems and root crowns of weakened or susceptible plant species, leading to severe physiological decline.
This pathogen targets a variety of forest, decorative, and ornamental crops, particularly those grown in moisture-heavy environments or areas with poor soil sanitation. The infection cycle usually begins with the fungus utilizing rotting wood debris in the soil as a nutrient base, before extending its mycelial network to the living tissues of nearby plants.
Key symptoms of Faerberia infection involve the sudden emergence of small, funnel-shaped fruiting bodies at the base of the plant or on the surrounding soil surface.
