The disease is caused by the fungus Falciphora oryzae, a soil-borne pathogen known for causing root necrosis in rice plants. This fungus disrupts the root system, preventing the effective uptake of nutrients and water, which ultimately leads to a decline in plant health and overall vigor.

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the primary crop impacted by this fungal infection. The pathogen targets young seedlings and plants in the tillering stage, making these phases critical for monitoring and disease detection. The spread of the fungus often correlates with contaminated fields or infected seeds.

Typical symptoms of infection include stunted growth, chlorosis, and general wilting of the leaves.
