Favolaschia calocera, commonly known as the Orange Ping-Pong Bat Fungus, is a distinctive invasive fungal species. While primarily a saprotroph, it is increasingly recognized as a problematic agent in forest pathology due to its aggressive colonization of woody substrates. It poses a significant challenge to biodiversity and the structural integrity of timber resources.

The fungus acts as a wood-decay agent within the Agaricales order. Its biology centers on the rapid decomposition of lignin and cellulose. By producing large quantities of spores, Favolaschia calocera can quickly outcompete native fungal populations. In cases of high humidity, it can transition from purely saprotrophic activity to opportunistic infection of weakened living tree tissues.

It targets a wide range of broad-leaved tree species. It is frequently found in managed forests, ornamental parks, and garden settings. The fungus is particularly hazardous to trees that are already suffering from stress, drought, or mechanical damage, as these conditions facilitate the entry of the mycelium into the living cambium layer.

Symptoms of infestation are characterized by the appearance of bright orange or reddish-orange, stalked or sessile fruiting bodies. These exhibit a striking reticulate or pore-like structure on the underside of the cap. Visible symptoms also include the rapid development of white rot in the wood, leading to structural instability and eventual limb failure or tree death.

The development of this pathogen is favored by high humidity and moderate temperatures. Effective management and protection strategies rely on the early detection and removal of infected wood debris. Preventive measures include regular sanitary pruning, improving air circulation in tree stands, and maintaining tree vigor to ensure that the bark remains an effective barrier against fungal pathogens.
