Fenestella is a genus of fungi that acts as a pathogen, causing necrotic lesions and bark infections in various woody plants. The disease is classified as a destructive fungal infection that primarily attacks the vascular system of the bark, leading to significant damage if left untreated.

The causal agents are ascomycete fungi, primarily the species Fenestella vestita and related strains. These pathogens target a wide range of host plants, including pome fruits like apples and pears, as well as various deciduous forest trees. Infection typically initiates through entry points such as pruning wounds, cracks, or frost damage on the bark surface.

The primary clinical signs of Fenestella include localized depressions or darkened, sunken areas on the bark. As the pathogen colonizes the phloem, the bark begins to crack, and small black fruiting bodies appear, rupturing the epidermis. These small structures are the hallmark of the fungus’s reproductive phase.

Environmental conditions that favor the progression of the disease are characterized by prolonged moisture, high humidity, and poor ventilation in the canopy. The fungus spreads most aggressively during cool, wet seasons. Host stress, caused by poor site selection or previous mechanical damage, significantly increases the tree's susceptibility to infestation.

The economic and aesthetic impact of Fenestella involves the gradual dieback of branches and potential death of the entire host plant. Effective control requires an integrated approach to orchard management. This includes pruning out infected limbs, using sharp, disinfected tools to prevent cross-contamination, and applying copper-based fungicides to protect open wounds and reduce the fungal spore load.
