Description
Fibularhizoctonia is a soil-borne fungal pathogen that causes significant damage to a wide range of crops. As a member of the basidiomycetes, this fungus survives in the soil as mycelium or sclerotia, allowing it to remain infectious for long periods until favorable conditions allow it to attack host plant tissues.
This pathogen primarily targets the root systems and crowns of various crops, including cereals, legumes, and several vegetable species. Its impact is most severe during the early developmental stages of plants, often leading to pre-emergence or post-emergence damping-off, which causes thin and uneven crop stands in the field.
The visible signs of infection include necrosis of the roots, dark brown lesions on the stem base, and a general lack of vigor in the plant. In moist conditions, a faint, web-like fungal growth may appear on the affected areas. These symptoms are often accompanied by stunted growth and yellowing of the foliage due to the plant's inability to uptake water and nutrients.
The development of the disease is highly correlated with environmental factors such as high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. Poorly drained, heavy, or compacted soils are particularly susceptible to outbreaks. Furthermore, the presence of infested crop residues in the soil provides a constant source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons.
Integrated management is essential for controlling this pathogen, focusing on the following core strategies:
- Implementing crop rotation with non-host species to break the pathogen lifecycle;
- Using high-quality seed treatments containing fungicides to protect seedlings;
- Ensuring proper soil drainage and aeration to create unfavorable conditions for the fungus;
- Managing plant residues through tillage to reduce the survival of the pathogen;
- Applying balanced fertilization to foster robust plant growth and resilience.
