Fibularhizoctonia psychrophila is a specialized psychrophilic fungal pathogen responsible for causing root rot and damping-off in various agricultural crops. As a cold-tolerant fungus, it thrives in environments where most soil-borne pathogens are inactive, making it a critical threat during the early spring or late autumn growth stages.
The pathogen primarily affects winter cereals, forage grasses, and a range of vegetable crops. By targeting the root system, it impairs the plant's ability to absorb essential nutrients and moisture, which leads to stunted growth, wilting, and, in severe cases, plant death. This disease is particularly problematic for crops emerging in cool, waterlogged soil conditions.
Symptoms of the infection typically include dark discoloration and necrosis of the root tissues.
