Description
Filobasidiellosis is a fungal disease caused by the basidiomycete Filobasidiella bacillispora. This pathogen serves as the sexual stage (teleomorph) of certain Cryptococcus species. In an agronomic context, it acts as a facultative parasite that can persist in soil or on crop debris, making it a persistent threat in environments with high humidity and poor sanitation.
The pathogen primarily affects woody ornamental plants, but it can also impact vegetable crops in greenhouse production. The infection targets the plant's vascular system, hindering the movement of water and nutrients, which ultimately results in structural weakening and a significant decline in the overall vigor of the host plant.
Key symptoms include the development of chlorotic lesions on leaves, which eventually progress into localized necrosis. A fine, powdery, or spiderweb-like fungal growth may become visible on the underside of the foliage. In advanced stages, plants exhibit premature leaf drop, stunted shoot elongation, and general physiological distress.
Disease outbreaks are highly correlated with high humidity levels and stable temperatures ranging from 18°C to 25°C. The spores are primarily dispersed via wind currents, splashing rain, or through human activity using contaminated tools. A combination of poor air circulation and moist microclimates significantly increases the risk of infection.
Effective management and protection strategies include:
- Strict sanitation practices to remove and destroy infected plant parts.
- Ensuring optimal spacing to facilitate air circulation and leaf drying.
- Application of systemic fungicides as soon as early symptoms are detected.
- Regular cleaning and disinfection of farm equipment to prevent spread between plots.
