Description
Pathogen and disease type. Filobasidium infection is caused by yeasts and yeast-like fungi belonging to the genus Filobasidium. These organisms are typically found as epiphytes on plant surfaces but can act as opportunistic pathogens under favorable conditions. They interfere with the plant's physiological functions, leading to tissue damage and reduced quality of harvested produce.
Susceptible crops. The genus has a broad host range, affecting various crops such as cereals, vegetables, and fruit-bearing trees. It is particularly notorious for damaging fruits and vegetables during post-harvest storage. In the field, it can be detected on leaves and stems, often remaining unnoticed until the infection enters a more aggressive stage.
Symptoms and signs. The disease manifests as whitish, creamy, or yellowish fungal colonies on the affected surface. As the infection progresses, it causes soft rot in fruits, leading to tissue softening and discoloration. Leaves may show necrotic spots or a fine, dusty coating, which differentiates this pathogen from more common molds.
Development and spread. High humidity and moderate temperatures are the primary drivers for the development of Filobasidium. Poor air circulation in dense crop stands or storage facilities significantly exacerbates the risk. The pathogen typically enters plant tissue through mechanical wounds, insect-induced damage, or natural openings like stomata.
Protection and prevention measures. Control strategies focus on integrated management, starting with strict hygiene in orchards and warehouses. Key measures include:
- Ensuring proper ventilation to lower humidity.
- Removing debris that acts as an inoculum source.
- Minimizing physical damage during harvesting and handling.
- Applying specific fungicides if the infection threshold is exceeded.
Integrated agricultural practices remain the most effective way to prevent widespread economic loss due to this fungal pathogen.
