Filobasidium uniguttulatum

Filobasidium uniguttulatum is a yeast-like fungus that belongs to the Basidiomycota phylum. In agronomic practice, it is often identified as an opportunistic pathogen that can affect the health of various plant species, particularly when plants are stressed or have compromised physiological defenses.

The host range for this pathogen includes a variety of agricultural and horticultural crops. It is most commonly found on the aerial parts of plants, such as leaves and fruit surfaces, where it thrives as an epiphyte before potentially colonizing tissue if entry points are available.

Symptomatology involves the appearance of superficial discoloration, chlorosis, and the development of localized necrotic lesions. As the infection progresses, the tissues may show signs of accelerated senescence, which negatively impacts the plant's metabolic processes and reduces overall agricultural yield quality.

The development and spread of the fungus are highly dependent on high humidity and poor ventilation. Spores are primarily disseminated through water splashing, air currents, and mechanical contact with contaminated surfaces, making orchard or greenhouse sanitation a critical factor in limiting its propagation.

Effective management and prevention strategies include:

• proper moisture control to prevent excessive humidity;
