Description

The Fistulinaceae family consists of wood-decaying fungi that are significant in the study of forest pathology. These fungi act as agents of brown rot, a condition where the pathogen selectively degrades cellulose within the host wood while leaving the lignin mostly intact. This process is highly detrimental to the structural integrity of the timber, turning the wood brittle and dark.

The most prominent member of this group is the beefsteak fungus, Fistulina hepatica, which primarily infects hardwoods like oak and chestnut. The disease is characterized by the internal colonization of the tree's heartwood. As the fungi secrete enzymes, they break down the structural carbohydrates of the wood, leading to the characteristic cuboidal cracking and structural failure of the infected timber.

Diagnostic symptoms are often visible through the development of distinct, tongue-shaped sporocarps on the trunk of the affected tree. Internally, the wood undergoes a color change, progressing to a deep chocolate-brown or reddish-brown hue. As the infection progresses, the wood loses its tensile strength, making the tree susceptible to windthrow and mechanical failure, which poses risks in managed landscapes.

The development of the disease is heavily dictated by environmental factors, particularly humidity levels and the availability of infection sites. The spores are typically airborne and enter the host through open wounds, pruning scars, or bark injuries caused by environmental stress or insect activity. Once established, the mycelium spreads slowly through the heartwood, weakening the host over many years.

Managing the impact of Fistulinaceae involves strict arboricultural practices. Preventive measures focus on minimizing mechanical injury to the bark and ensuring proper sealing of pruning cuts. Regular monitoring of trees for any evidence of fungal fruiting bodies is essential to identify early infections. In forestry, the removal of heavily infested trees is the primary method to reduce the inoculum level and protect the surrounding stand from further spread.
