The fungus displays a complex lifestyle, capable of surviving as a saprotroph in soil while exhibiting pathogenic traits toward various agricultural and horticultural crops.
The host range of this pathogen includes a variety of economically important plants, particularly within the Solanaceae and Fabaceae families. Infection primarily occurs through the root system, where the fungus gains entry into the vascular bundles, causing physical obstruction and triggering defense responses that often result in the plant's premature senescence.
The symptoms of Flavocillium acerosum infection are characterized by progressive wilting, yellowing of foliage starting from the lower leaves, and stunting of plant growth. In severe cases, internal tissues, specifically the vascular ring, exhibit visible browning, which is a diagnostic indicator of restricted water flow within the plant stems.
