The causative agent of this disease is the fungus Foliophoma fallens, which acts as a serious pathogen primarily affecting the foliage and stems of various plant species. It is a fungal disease that disrupts the plant's physiological functions by causing necrotic spots, thereby compromising the structural integrity and metabolic activity of the host tissues.
The disease is most commonly associated with legumes, particularly sweet clover (Melilotus species). It infects the above-ground parts, feeding on the host tissue and spreading throughout the canopy during favorable environmental conditions, which can lead to significant biomass loss if left unmanaged.
Symptoms initially manifest as chlorotic spots on the leaves, which later progress into dark, necrotic lesions. As the infection matures, these spots can coalesce, leading to premature leaf drop. Diagnostic observation often reveals small, dark pycnidia (fruiting bodies) within the lesions, especially when humidity levels remain consistently high.
The development and dispersal of Foliophoma fallens are heavily dependent on moisture. Wet weather, prolonged rainfall, and moderate temperatures provide the ideal environment for the fungus to release spores, which are then carried by splashing water or wind to adjacent healthy plants. High-density planting exacerbates the spread of the disease.
The economic damage caused by this pathogen includes reduced forage quality and lower yields of seed production. Prevention and management strategies include:
