Description

Fomitopsidaceae is a family of wood-decay fungi primarily responsible for brown rot. These fungi play a significant role in forest ecology by breaking down organic matter; however, they are considered major pathogens in forestry, causing substantial degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose in timber and standing trees.

These fungi typically affect coniferous and, occasionally, deciduous tree species. The infection generally begins when spores land on wounds, frost cracks, or broken branches, allowing the fungal mycelium to colonize the heartwood or sapwood of the host, eventually spreading throughout the internal stem structure.

Diagnostic symptoms of a Fomitopsidaceae infection include the presence of woody, perennial, or annual fruiting bodies (conks) on the trunk. Internally, the wood undergoes a transformation, becoming brittle, brown, and displaying a characteristic cubical crack pattern as the cellulose is enzymatically destroyed.

Environmental conditions that favor the development of these fungi include high humidity levels and moderate temperatures. Poor forest management, such as leaving decaying stumps or dense stands that restrict airflow, often increases the risk of rapid spread through the release of basidiospores that infect adjacent, healthy trees.

Protection and preventive measures focus on forest hygiene. Key strategies involve the timely removal of infested trees and stumps to reduce inoculum load, the avoidance of wounding trunks during forest operations, and promoting tree vitality through appropriate thinning. Maintaining healthy forest ecosystems is the best long-term strategy for mitigating wood decay outbreaks.
