Description
Fomitopsis is a genus of wood-decay fungi characterized by their ability to cause severe brown rot in various tree species. These pathogens primarily target the cellulose component of wood, resulting in a dark, crumbly residue that compromises the structural integrity and overall health of the host plant.
The host range is predominantly focused on conifers, including spruce, pine, and fir trees, although some species can also colonize hardwood trees under favorable conditions. As a saprotroph and sometimes a necrotroph, the fungus frequently attacks aged or stressed trees, often entering through natural fissures or wounds caused by external mechanical damage.
Typical symptoms include the appearance of distinct, perennial, bracket-like or hoof-shaped fruiting bodies on the trunk or stumps. Internally, the wood becomes brittle and develops a characteristic blocky fracture pattern, which indicates that the fungus has successfully degraded the structural components of the tree's internal vascular system.
The development of Fomitopsis is heavily dependent on moisture availability, as the fungus requires a consistent damp environment to colonize new substrates and produce spores. Spore dissemination is facilitated by air currents and water runoff, allowing the pathogen to spread efficiently through dense forest stands where conditions remain stable for fungal growth.
Management of Fomitopsis involves rigorous forest hygiene practices to prevent widespread outbreaks. These include the removal of infected wood, which serves as a primary inoculum source, and the application of protective wound dressings to trees that have suffered from storm damage or pruning. Maintaining tree vigor through proper silvicultural techniques remains the best long-term strategy for prevention.
