Description
Fomitopsis palustris is a destructive wood-decay fungus responsible for causing severe brown rot in trees and timber products. As a basidiomycete, it primarily targets the cellulose content of the cell walls, leaving behind brittle, cube-shaped brown residue consisting mainly of lignin. This process dramatically compromises the structural integrity of the wood.
This pathogen commonly affects various coniferous species and, to a lesser extent, certain hardwood varieties. While often found in forest ecosystems on fallen or decaying logs, it frequently attacks living trees that are weakened by environmental stress, wounding, or root rot. Additionally, it is a significant concern for wooden structures located in high-humidity environments.
The visual symptoms include a characteristic color change in the wood, turning dark brown as the infection progresses. Infected wood becomes extremely brittle and may develop deep, cubical cracks. The presence of hard, shelf-like fruiting bodies (conks) on the bark or at the base of the trunk is a definitive sign of advanced colonization by the fungal mycelium.
Environmental conditions such as high moisture levels and warm temperatures significantly accelerate the development and spread of Fomitopsis palustris. The fungus thrives in damp areas where the wood moisture content exceeds the critical threshold. Spores can easily spread through wind, water, and direct contact with infected debris, initiating new infection sites on healthy tissues.
Effective management and prevention strategies include the following steps:
- sanitary logging and removal of infected trees to reduce inoculum pressure;
- application of professional wood preservatives to protect vulnerable timber;
- improving forest site drainage to reduce excessive humidity;
- regular inspection of high-value trees to identify and treat early signs of infection.
