Frigidopyrenia is a genus of fungi belonging to the class Ascomycetes. In an agronomic context, it is recognized as a specific type of pathogen that interacts with lichen communities and, occasionally, the bark and tissues of plants in cold climate regions. It is primarily studied as a parasitic or saprotrophic fungus adapted to extreme environmental conditions.

The causal agent is a microscopic fungus characterized by the production of perithecia — fruiting bodies embedded within the host tissue. The disease is classified as a necrotrophic infection, as the fungus degrades plant cell walls to extract nutrients, which leads to localized tissue damage.

This fungus mainly affects woody plants and perennial crops located in northern latitudes or high-altitude regions. Its presence in agricultural fields is often secondary, colonizing weakened woody tissues or bark, which can exacerbate the decline of the host plant if not properly managed during the vegetative season.

Symptoms of the infection include the appearance of small, distinct black spots on the bark or leaf surfaces, which represent the fruiting structures of the pathogen. These lesions can lead to tissue chlorosis, bark cracking, and localized necrosis, eventually inhibiting the plant's natural growth and physiological vigor.

The development of Frigidopyrenia is favored by low temperatures and high environmental humidity. The spores are primarily disseminated through wind and water splash during rainfall. Protection and prevention strategies focus on maintaining high plant health, pruning infected woody parts, and applying appropriate fungicidal treatments when symptoms of colonization are observed.
