Frommea is a genus of rust fungi that functions as an obligate parasite, causing specific foliar diseases in various herbaceous plants. The most well-known species, Frommea obtusa, primarily targets plants within the Rosaceae family. As a specialized pathogen, it relies entirely on its living host to complete its life cycle, causing varying degrees of damage to the host's physiological health.
The disease is caused by fungi that produce distinct spore stages. These pathogens infect the plant by penetrating the tissue, where they develop an extensive mycelial network. This growth consumes the nutrients intended for the plant's own development, weakening the host and making it more susceptible to environmental stressors and secondary infections.
Symptoms of Frommea infection are typically observed on the underside of the leaves. Small, yellowish-orange pustules appear, which eventually release spores that can further spread the infection. As the disease progresses, the surrounding leaf tissue turns yellow, necrotizes, and eventually sheds. The development and spread of Frommea are heavily dictated by microclimatic conditions. High humidity, cool to moderate temperatures, and persistent moisture on leaf surfaces are the primary triggers for spore germination and infection. In such conditions, the fungus spreads rapidly, and spores can be disseminated over long distances by wind or water splashing, establishing new infection sites throughout a garden or field.
Controlling Frommea requires a proactive approach centered on sanitation and environmental management. To minimize the impact of the disease, practitioners should implement the following:
- Thorough cleaning of fallen debris at the end of the season to remove overwintering inoculum.
- Ensuring adequate spacing between plants to reduce humidity in the foliage canopy.
- Applying fungicides during periods of high humidity if the disease history is known.
