Furcouncinula is a genus of ascomycetous fungi within the order Erysiphales. These fungi are identified as obligate plant parasites, responsible for causing powdery mildew on various woody species, primarily within the Fagaceae family. Unlike some generalist pathogens, Furcouncinula has evolved specialized mechanisms to infect leaves and shoots, establishing a long-term nutritional relationship with its host plant.
The primary hosts for Furcouncinula are oak species. The infection manifests as a superficial mycelial growth, appearing as a white, powdery coating on the surface of the leaves and tender young twigs. Within these colonies, the fungus produces conidia, which serve as the primary means of asexual dispersal. Later in the season, black, spherical structures called cleistothecia develop, allowing the fungus to survive winter conditions.
