Description

Fusarium acuminatum is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the genus Fusarium, responsible for root rot and stem base rot in a wide variety of cultivated crops. This fungus is highly persistent, surviving in the soil and on crop debris for extended periods through the production of dormant chlamydospores.

The host range for this pathogen is extensive, affecting major cereal crops such as wheat, barley, and oats, as well as corn, soybeans, and several vegetable species. The infection often starts at the seedling stage, leading to pre-emergence or post-emergence damping-off, which significantly reduces plant density.

Clinical signs of infection include browning and decay of the root system, which impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients. Above-ground symptoms involve chlorosis (yellowing), stunted growth, and premature wilting. In humid conditions, a characteristic mycelial growth may appear on the lower part of the stem.

The development and spread of Fusarium acuminatum are heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and moderate temperatures ranging from 15 to 25°C. Stress factors, such as soil compaction, poor drainage, or incorrect sowing depth, exacerbate the vulnerability of the crop to fungal colonization.

Management of this disease relies on an integrated approach. Essential practices include the use of certified, fungicide-treated seeds, balanced crop rotation to reduce inoculum buildup, and proper field management to ensure good soil aeration. Fungicide applications during critical growth stages can further mitigate the risk of severe outbreaks.
