The fungus affects a wide range of host plants, most notably cereal crops, legumes, and several vegetable varieties. It is capable of attacking plants at various growth stages, although the most severe symptoms usually appear during active vegetative growth or the grain-filling period. The pathogen is highly adapted to persistence in diverse environmental conditions.
Typical symptoms include yellowing and curling of the lower leaves, followed by progressive wilting that affects the entire plant. A diagnostic sign is the internal browning or discoloration of the stem and root vascular bundles.
