Description
Fusarium amplum is a soil-borne fungal pathogen belonging to the diverse genus Fusarium. It is recognized as a causative agent of root rot, seedling blight, and vascular wilt in various agricultural crops. By invading the root system and colonizing the xylem, the fungus secretes mycotoxins that effectively inhibit nutrient and water uptake, leading to the rapid decline of the host plant.
The host range includes cereal crops, maize, and several vegetable species. The pathogen typically enters the plant through small injuries in the roots or areas where lateral roots emerge. Because the fungus can persist in the soil and on crop debris for several seasons, it poses a significant challenge to farmers practicing continuous cropping systems.
Initial symptoms are characterized by stunted growth and wilting, which often progresses into leaf chlorosis and necrosis. A dark-brown discoloration of the stem base and the root system is a classic diagnostic feature of this infection. In high humidity, mycelial mats ranging from white to pinkish can be observed on the surface of infected tissues.
The development of Fusarium amplum is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as soil moisture levels and temperature. Fluctuations between cool, wet conditions during germination and warm, dry spells later in the season create stress that makes plants significantly more susceptible to infection. High soil compaction and poor drainage also exacerbate the severity of the disease.
