Description
Pathogen and disease type: Fusarium annulatum is a fungal pathogen responsible for Fusarium wilt, a severe vascular disease. The fungus enters the plant through the root system, colonizing the vascular tissues and secreting toxins that prevent water and nutrient transport, leading to physiological collapse.
Host range: This pathogen affects a diverse range of agricultural crops, including cereals, vegetables, and ornamentals. It is highly persistent in the soil, surviving as chlamydospores for many years even in the absence of a primary host, which makes crop rotation difficult without a comprehensive management plan.
Symptoms and signs: The first symptoms often include yellowing of the foliage and drooping of the leaves during the hottest parts of the day. As the disease progresses, the plant becomes permanently wilted, and an internal examination of the stem or root collar typically reveals a distinctive brown discoloration of the vascular ring.
Conditions for development: Fusarium annulatum thrives in warm soil environments, typically between +22°C and +28°C. High moisture levels combined with poor soil drainage facilitate the germination of spores and the subsequent infection process. Stress factors such as root damage caused by pests also act as entry points for the pathogen.
Harmfulness and protection measures: The economic impact is substantial, as the infection can lead to complete loss of yield in susceptible fields. Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential:
- Planting resistant or tolerant cultivars
- Practicing long-term crop rotation with non-host crops
- Treating seeds with appropriate systemic fungicides
- Optimizing soil fertility and managing pH levels
- Sanitation measures to remove infected crop debris from the field
