Description
Fusarium brachygibbosum is a soil-borne pathogenic fungus classified within the Fusarium genus, primarily responsible for severe root rot and vascular wilt in various agricultural crops. Known for its persistent nature, this pathogen remains in the soil as chlamydospores, enabling it to survive harsh conditions and reinfect fields over multiple growing seasons.
The host range of this pathogen is diverse, affecting major crops such as wheat, barley, tomatoes, and cotton. The fungus exhibits a high level of virulence, particularly during the early stages of plant development, when seedlings are most susceptible to invading pathogens, often leading to reduced plant stand and yield loss.
Diagnostic symptoms include the discoloration and necrosis of root tissues, which gradually lead to the disintegration of the vascular system. As the disease progresses, infected plants exhibit stunted growth, chlorosis, and sudden wilting. In humid environments, white or pale-pink mycelial growth may become visible at the base of the stem or on damaged root areas.
The proliferation of Fusarium brachygibbosum is favored by warm soil temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C and excessive soil moisture. The primary pathways for dispersal include infected seeds, contaminated farm equipment moving soil particles, and irrigation or runoff water that carries the fungal spores into healthy areas of the field.
Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach to minimize the impact of this fungus. Recommended strategies include:

- Use of fungicide-treated certified seeds.
- Implementation of good soil drainage to reduce humidity.
- Utilization of biological control agents such as Trichoderma species.
- Careful monitoring of fields during the critical germination and seedling establishment phases.
