The disease is caused by the fungus Fusarium camptoceras, which belongs to the Fusarium genus. As a soil-borne fungus, it represents a significant threat to agricultural productivity worldwide.
The host range of Fusarium camptoceras is broad, encompassing various field crops, vegetables, fruits, and nursery plants. It often infects plants through existing wounds in the roots or stems, making it particularly dangerous in environments with frequent mechanical interventions or in poorly drained agricultural systems where root health is compromised.
