Fusarium cerealis is a prominent fungal pathogen responsible for Fusarium head blight (FHB) in various cereal crops. As a member of the Fusarium genus, this fungus is known for its ability to persist in crop residues and soil, acting as a primary source of inoculum for subsequent growing seasons. The disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions, specifically moisture during the flowering stage of the host plant.

The host range of Fusarium cerealis includes wheat, barley, rye, oats, and maize. The pathogen attacks the heads of these plants, particularly when temperatures are moderate and humidity is high. Infections occur primarily through the open florets during flowering, allowing the fungus to colonize the developing grain and rachis, ultimately impeding the transport of nutrients to the seed.

Symptoms of the infection become visible as the crop matures. Infected spikelets lose their green color prematurely, often showing a bleached appearance. A distinct feature of this disease is the presence of fungal mycelium and conidia, which manifest as pink or orange spore masses on the glumes and rachis. Grains from infected heads are often shriveled, discolored, and have low test weights.

The economic impact of this disease is two-fold: direct yield reduction and the accumulation of hazardous mycotoxins, such as deoxynivalenol (DON) and zearalenone. These toxins pose a significant risk to human and livestock health if ingested, leading to strict regulations regarding the safety of grain lots intended for market distribution or animal feed.

Effective management strategies require an integrated approach to minimize disease pressure:

  • Selection of resistant or moderately resistant cultivars.
  • Crop rotation strategies to avoid planting susceptible grains after wheat or corn.
  • Tillage practices that incorporate crop debris deep into the soil to reduce inoculum levels.
  • Timely application of systemic fungicides at the onset of flowering to protect the spike.
